Meet Courtney. She just tried to learn how to play Mahjong… and it did not go well. Oh, it didn’t help that she had several glasses of wine. It also did not help that she was grouped with at least two women who were probably on the advanced math track in middle school. As Courtney was handed the rule pamphlet, she swore she saw the Da Vinci code. Symbols swirled around, English words became foreign and strange. She somehow now knows how to set up a VCR after reading them, but still does not quite understand how to win atMahjong. There were lovely, helpful (and sober) instructors walking around assisting the players, but, Courtney just could not make sense of what they were telling her. “You can keep the cucumber but be looking for a zoo with a cute pumpkin cup” they seemed to say. “Butter the printer, but don’t forget to tap the ceiling fan”. What?? Eventually, some of the fog would clear, and Courtney would begin to grasp a concept – barely. Then her friend next to her, also learning, would say “OH! I see. So you badger the antlers until the cheese gets chapped. So I am just waiting on tires?“ “Yes!! Exactly!!” The instructor would say. Courtney would just stare at them incredulously, mouth agape. Bams? Craks? Dots? It was an upsetting, discombobulating slap to Courtney‘s ego. As she spiraled and felt herself shutting down, she heard the crash of the gong, announcing another giggly winner. Courtney will stick to Go Fish.
